With his film Black gold, Jean-Jacques Annaud had of what to restore its coat of arms by leaning over the geopolitical history of the oil-bearing deposits of the Arabic peninsula. It was to get enthusiastic early.
The film begins so. While they didn't cease making war, the sultans Nessib and Amar found an agreement by decreeing neutral zone the region of the yellow crescent until the day when, unfortunately, the oil giant Texaco discovered what is going to become the first pole of worldwide production of crude. Irrefutably, the first woof of Black gold is based on the local political impact due to discovery by the Americans of oil fields in Arabia.
But finally, of real History, the nada! The film dedicates itself much more on the emergence of a new Arab charismatic leader coming from a noxious situation, or rather fallacious negotiations between two kings, the one progressive, the other backward-looking man (finally, not so simple, because roles are interchangeable in Black gold).
At the beginning of this historical parabola of epoch Ibn Saoud, the king Nessib (Antonio Banderas) approves of the arrival of this new financial manna for his people (building of schools, of libraries, founding equipment, etc.). But the money being a terrible trouble, the garden of Paradise was devastated, broken cordial understanding. Suddenly, Nessib becomes the arm armed with the Big Satan USA). In front of so much avarice, the king Amar (Mark Strong), until then the one who had understood nothing, becomes the standard-bearer of virtue made dirty, of derided honour, of lost innocence.
In the centre, the young prince Auda (Tahar Rahim), foster son and at the same time natural of both warlike kings (the film will explain you), which will pass in turn the title of turkey of the joke of which everybody makes fun because of too soft hands because taught to fondle too many books, in unifier's role of clans for a found peace, nice prince who will marry a nice princess, of sage among the sages. Auda would find the transposition in one Lawrence d' Arabie going to Aqaba and who, on the way, federates the enemy brothers.
At arrival, Islam (the big subject of the Westerners who can't help being moralizing). Here is the big principle of Black gold: a blow, it is wrong; a blow, it is well. Eternal conflict between obscurantism and light. Under its simple history declined in nice costumes and decors, Black gold is all set to disembark on December 23rd to the American market. This risks passing hardly there. But let's be not too malicious with the friend Jean-Jacques Annaud. The great value of its film (let's not forget the game of the actors that in the same) is to show that everything is complex in life. "Not, joking apart!".
