(:: Scenes of the movie ::)
Preface:
Some news changes everything. The existence of a man and his fellows seesaw with the diagnosis of a cancer. Written by the one who indeed knew situation, the film draws us away in a battle for life as moving as hilarious, which is going to change all those who will be linked there.
Inspired by a lived experience, 50/50 a history is where humour and emotion come into sight from the worst situations. Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Seth Rogen interpret two better friends whose life topples over after an unexpected diagnosis. Seth Rogen is also producer, with Evan Goldberg and Well Karlin. Jonathan Levine accomplishes the film according to a scenario of Will Reiser.
Will Reiser tells: «By going up to me, death reminded me that I was well alive. It is mad what perspective to leave forever gives you the courage to say and to make! There hasn't the more time as lie, any more time as for vain. Everything becomes direct, strong, sincere. These are particular circumstances during which yourlself and your fellows see life in another way. This cancer had repercussions on everybody. There is what it causes in you, at the same time on physical plan and on psychical plan, but there is also what it causes at others. In some months, I lived more and more extremely than during all rest of my existence. There was frenzy, fright, love, insane knack, and we told ourselves that you shouldn't keep what we had lived and crossed for ourselves.»
For Will and all his fellows, family and friends, the perspective of a premature death calls many things into question. Facing this drama lived as an injustice, all are going to react and fight to support it. Each its method, each its commitment, but all are going to go to the sense of life.
Seth Rogen entrusts: «Will and I had just worked together on« Da Ali G Show» when he learnt that he was sick. It was a shock for all of us, terrible news, traumatisante and destructive. We all were so much divested in front of this situation that each made a bit anything There was the worst as the best! And in the fire of reaction, in this battle which it was necessary to lead, incredible things arrived. We told ourselves that the best way of sharing this lesson of hope a sincere film was to make it. We put all in it that we lived and felt and we all got involved thoroughly to give rise to this plan. I think that this film can make a tremendous number of good to people.»

The only thing to be made...
Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg and Will Reiser met while they worked on satirical series americano-British worship " Da Ali G Show ". Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg were young authors and Will Reiser started his career as linked producer. All old three of about twenty years, they were the youngest sons of the team and didn't hesitate to tie links. Evan Goldberg remembers: «The rhythm of series was hellish. We worked twenty-four hours on twenty-four, seven days of seven. Will appeared every more exhausted day. We didn't know that he was sick and we made fun of him. Besides, Sacha Baron Cohen, the star series, was the first to winnow him thereupon. And Will laughed with us.»
Seth Rogen comments: «Will was really wrong. He made me think of this stage of the ADVENTURERS OF The LOST ARK where types disintegrate and fall in dust He didn't enjoy good health any more, it was flagrant. »Some months later, Will Reiser announced to his friends that he had cancer. During this sad period, Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg supported their accomplice but also encouraged him to write.
Seth Rogen entrusts: «In life, when a tragedy happens, my first reflex is to want to make a film. I didn't remember having seen it who dealt with a young man struggling against a lethal illness. I told myself that this could be very interesting – and even odd! Will is facetious, brought forward, neurotic. The cancer couldn't find worse patient. Of course, nobody takes the announcement of a cancer with good mood, but Will had another force to confront it.»
However, before being able to write a scenario, Will Reiser had a long way to be covered. Its doctors first diagnosed a lymphome before retracting. Batteries of examinations revealed that a huge tumour stretched along the spinal column.
Will Reiser tells: «It was a tumour huge and very badly put. I had this curious entity in the body and I even didn't know about what it was. The doctor said to me that I was good for an operation of six hours to extract the tumour, after what I would need a long period of physical and psychological recovery. Outright, I had no idea of what it represented. I was unaware that I am going to endure the worst suffering of my life.»
Two years were necessary before Will Reiser envisages this bad pass under an "artistic" angle. He follows: «It was liberating! I didn't think that it would produce this effect. The more I spoke to Evan of my cancer, the more he encouraged me to write.»
Evan Goldberg comments: «Humour is often born of sad or terrible things. The more subject is dark, the more it is odd and in type, we had an ideal topic there!»
Well Karlin, the producer, entrusts: «The basic trio was legitimate. They had crossed everything together. Scenario was solid, odd and completely unpublished. Everybody was very passionate at the idea of working on this plan.» Nathan Kahane, executive producer, entrusts: «I knew no history as this one. Seth and Evan count among the most creative producers whom I know. They were at good school beside Judd Apatow.» »

Laugh at the worst to give the best:
Finished scenario, producers put on in search of a film director capable of transcribing the subtlety of feelings and the fair mixture of action, of tragedy and of humour. Touched by the story, Jonathan Levine, film director of WACKNESS, Price of the public the Festival of Sundance of 2008, tried to get into contact directly with Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg.
The film director remembers: «I wrote them to say to them all that I liked in their history. I loved this plan. I absolutely wanted to work with them.» Will Reiser comments: «Jonathan Levine had perfectly grabbed the mind of this film, on border between drama and comedy.» »
Jonathan Levine follows: «It is a history centered on the characters. The film is very odd, but the laugh follows from credible behaviours and from stages of real life. I wanted that humour comes into sight from very characters. That's how I arrested the film.»
The preparation of the film demanded that the team discusses with the true sick of the cancer, including with Will Reiser. The visit of a centre for the treatment of the cancer of Seattle allowed to know better the details of the chemotherapy and of the different treatments. During this preparation, the team realised that many collaborators had been touched by illness. Will Reiser explains:« When you announce your cancer, you become the member of a strange brotherhood, you enter a network of solidarity. However surprising it seems, the cancer can make more human. The sick, we all feel the same thing, a feeling of loneliness, the impression that our body leaves us and a difficulty in speaking. Around me, I had a feeling that everybody had fear. All spoke to me about the treatment. My case was recalled by saying ‘Ah, yes, I know it’ I became a show. That is why I tried hard to laugh at my case as many as possible.»
Evan Goldberg remembers: «Will lived on surprising things. Without knowing too much why, people started to confide in him. This aspect in the film is found. Every character is going to resolve his own problems across Adam's cancer.»
In 50/50, Will Reiser slipped some details of his own experience – in the hospital, his true IRM and other scanners are seen – but many others come from the imagination of the authors and from the their researches. For example, Will Reiser hadn't to suffer chemotherapy before his surgical operation, contrary to Adam.
Definite Will Reiser: «50/50 an autobiography isn't. The film draws inspiration from my experience and from those of people who encircle me. Other cancerous patients suffered treatments much worse than mine. With a cancer, your cells mutate and turn round against you. There isn't more personal, more intimate attack. How to succeed in speaking about it with your circle? I wanted to show that this test was sad, odd and absurd at the same time. Humour helped me to resist and I wanted to share this approach. I hope that this film will allow to people to speak about what they endure and not to be afraid any more of words. As well as it is good to cry, it is good to laugh at illness and at its absurdity.»
An adjournment with surprising effects...
Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays the role of Adam Lerner and Seth Rogen that of Kyle, its best friend. The film also stages Anjelica Huston, Anna Kendrick and Bryce Dallas Howard who camps the girlfriend of Adam. Nathan Kahane declares: «I completely fell under the spell of casting. For every character, we had charismatic and human actors.»
ADAM:
Will Reiser explains: «Adam Lerner is a perfectionist confronted with an event which he can't control. The cancer destroys everything and ruins the life which you had constructed. But you can make nothing there. It is necessary to agree to cease wanting to control everything. Adam leads a pretty poor existence but he isn't aware of it. The reappraisal of his life is in the middle of the film. He is going to have to recover in reason in an age when nobody makes him.»
Joseph Gordon-Levitt was chosen to play Adam Lerner. Jonathan Levine comments: «Joe had his own vision of the character and he could work with Seth and Evan. On the paper, Adam was a completely different character. Joe left the description of Will, but he fabricated a part of the personality of the character himself. He brought him a true depth.»
Well Karlin tells: «Joe is a young actor experienced and sure of himself. He took his character where we would have never imagined him. »Joseph Gordon-Levitt entrusts: «Laugh of the similar situation wasn't obvious. However, people who suffer or suffered the cancer always speak about it with a top of irony and a lot of humour. At the bottom, humour am the most human of reactions. It is a plate but it is true: laugh is always good for health.» »
The actor follows: «50/50 a comedy is which stages complex and realistic human beings. They seem more true than nature! Adam, for example, is the last person in the world to be able to support such test. It is the type of type that saw in constant fright that an incurable illness» is diagnosed it Seth Rogen comments: «Joe is a deep actor who works all day long, and not only when he is in front of the camera. It is as thanks to his humanity as they become attached to the character.»« Joe est un acteur profond qui travaille toute la journée, et pas seulement lorsqu’il est devant la caméra. »
KYLE:
Since his revelation on big screen in 40 YEARS, ALWAYS PUCEAU, Seth Rogen appeared in ten films which all were of successes in the box-office. He interpreter Kyle, the best friend of Adam. Well Karlin comments: «The men as Seth are rare in this job. He can make everything: it is a terrifically gifted scriptwriter, a very good actor, and he knows what means to endorse producer's role. »Will Reiser notices: «The character of Kyle is representative of people of our generation, who are often thrown into confusion facing the unexpected, but he resembles Seth so a lot …» »
Seth Rogen comments: «I must suppose that I am in many aspects of the role, as his clumsy attitude at the time when Will was sick. My character is confused but he can't put words on his feelings. He tries to get all this from the light and to make fun of situation. At the bottom, I think that it is a good attitude. He tries to see the positive sides. But he proves to be rather insensible. I was him, also. I recommended to Will to write on his cancer. It is almost the attitude of Kyle in the film.»
Evan Goldberg teases: «The character of Kyle draws inspiration undoubtedly from Seth, with the difference that in life, Seth can't redeem himself at the end! In any case, facing the illness of Will, none of us knew how to react. »In 50/50, Kyle sees Adam's cancer as a chance to test all that he has been able never to make before. He would like to see his friend using life every other minute. He persuades him even what is more his illness is the perfect means to wrap the girls...
Seth Rogen explains: «Paradoxically, I met my companion at the time when Will Reiser was sick. I recalled the unhappy situation in which was my friend and she right away thought I was affecting. »Will Reiser confesses: «I must suppose that my illness also allowed me meetings! I recalled my cancer and immediately, a girl opened me the heart. To take an appointment down became the easiest thing of the world.» Joseph Gordon-Levitt comments: «Behind the debatable behaviour of Kyle hides the best of the friends. He has a large heart and he really supports his friend. However, sometimes, he acts as an idiot. It arrives at all friends... Kyle thinks that what needs Adam, it is to learn to use his cancer to get what he wants of girls.»« Je dois admettre que ma maladie m’a également permis des rencontres ! »
Jonathan Levine explains: «On the film, the creative environment which we had instituted gave free rein to all approaches and to all styles. If Joe is known for his dramatic talent and Seth for his funny side, two could fit to our working method based on improvisation. Many stages created of themselves and each had opportunity to bloom by choosing the attitude which he the best smelt. Seth took numerous initiatives in the course of stages with Joe, which gave rise at extraordinary instants.» Joseph Gordon-Levitt remembers:« Sometimes, with Seth, we were in complete improvisation and it was brilliant. Job often demands that they turn that the same version still and still, what is rather tiring. But not on this filming! Jonathan Levine was the first to say ‘very well, we hold this stage, how can we decline it?’ The set was then transformed into fair of seize until a good idea is born of the collective good mood.»
KATHERINE :
Anna Kendrick, named to Oscars for her role in IN TEA AIR with George Clooney, camps here Katherine, therapist who follows Adam during his treatment. Nathan Kahane declares: «Anna is part of the most refreshing stars of younger generation. She has a natural remarkable and a fierce intelligence. She is so soft and delightful that she attracts people to her. Anna is the sun of this film.»
The definite actress: «Adam is only the third patient of my character, and it is a very delicate case. Katherine approaches the job under a very rational angle. She wants to make everything according to the rules. All scenes of the film could be real and nothing is ever vulgar or artificial. If one of your best friends falls ill, you will live him as a tragedy and it will be difficult, but there will always be an instant when you will need to laugh. All film is there! It isn't just about a comedy which infringes a taboo. It is an authentic work.» She follows: «To work with Jonathan Levine was a privilege. It is one of the rare film directors who is attentive to each and receptive in all what takes place. He really listens to us.»
Also, the actress was delighted to give retort to all partners. She confirms: «Without preamble, Joseph and me we are found to the one facing other one, but it is part of actor's job. Suddenly, you are in a room in front of a person with whom you are supposed to maintain an exceptional report. It is always delicate to predict if this is going to walk or not. Joe proved to be opened and he could make believe me in a true relation.» Anna Kendrick goes on: «As for Seth, he is tremendous. His humour is absolutely brilliant and his presence is extremely reassuring. It encourages you continuously and he is great odd.» »
RACHAEL:
Bryce Dallas Howard interprets the girlfriend of Adam, Rachael, a contemporary abstract artist. Evan Goldberg explains: «Bryce plays one of the most captivating characters of the film. Seth and I planes tried to collaborate with her again and again these five last years. »Nathan Kahane comments: «More known for her dramatic roles, Bryce literally Scotch-taped us! It is an incredible actress. We auditioned her for the role even if he went out particularly of his habitual register, and she was fantastic! »Definite Jonathan Levine: «Rachael was one of the characters the most difficult to surround, but Bryce managed to make flow her humanity and her humour.» »
REVEILLE:
It is big Anjelica Huston who plays the role of Diana Lerner, the mother of Adam. Seth Rogen entrusts: «Think that we had Anjelica Huston in our film was surrealist. Anjelica is an actress who sublimates the game of others by her only presence. Besides, she is very odd.» Well Karlin explains: «Anjelica brings all its charisma and its experience on the set. But she can also prove to be light and she perfectly grabbed the humour of her character. »Anjelica Huston comments: «My character, Diana, is emotional and a bit intrusive person. A lot of love between her and her son is smelt, but I think that even if he loves his mother, Adam must make sure that she doesn't hinder her freedom too much.» »
The actress follows: «The film is odd and touching. He blends drama and comedy with a lot of effectiveness, what is rather rare. I had ever read nothing of such. The idea of a comedy of the cancer can seem risky, but Will could approach subject in a completely innovative way. He knows his enemy well and the situations from which humour can come into sight.» Jonathan Levine notices: «Anjelica is tremendous in this film and each of his gestures sniffs sincerity. Film director herself, she perfectly included creative approach and she proved to be a tremendous collaborator.» »
The first stage of Anjelica Huston is that where his son announces him that he is attained of illness. The parents of Will Reiser visited the set that day The scriptwriter remembers: «My mother started to cry. The stage was emotional Voir Anjelica in the skin of a mother who hears this revelation, the whole in front of my mother, an experience was. I wrote this history, I lived it, but see my own mother becoming identified with the character, this, it is incomparable.»

Filming:
The action of 50/50 takes place in Seattle but the film was entirely made in Vancouver and in its vicinity. Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg grew in the Canadian metropolis.
Evan Goldberg remembers: «Younger, we knew that heaps of films turned here and we always told ourselves that one day our turn would come. We had written SUPERGRAVE so that he is turned in Vancouver, but he was finally filmed in the United States. Also, EXPRESS FRENZY was conceived to be accomplished in Vancouver, but they mildly asked us to abolish all ‘Canadian stupidity’ This time, for 50/50, we expected in no way to turn in Canada, but Mandate Pictures thought that Vancouver was the most appropriate destination. It was the best thing which could arrive at us!»
Leader interior decorator Annie Spitz had worked with Jonathan Levine on her previous film, WACKNESS. She remembers: «Jonathan wished realistic decors. One of our first visits drove us to the private hospital Fred Hutchinson, specialised in the struggle against the cancer. At first, we hoped to turn in a true private hospital, but it really turned out to be too much complicated. We therefore copied everything truthfully, up to the specific chairs conceived for the chemotherapy which we made import directly from Los Angeles.»
Adam's home was chosen in a residential area of Burnaby, near Vancouver. Leader interior decorator explains:« When you film a home, you need a so opened space as possible. With the one whom we chose, we had many solutions of positioning for the camera and high ceilings, improved for the highlighting. Someone better ideas came from Joseph Gordon-Levitt. He had Adam's definite idea. He imagined him very ordered, carried on household, plants and baseball. It is always very nice to collaborate with the actors.»
Rachael, the girlfriend of Adam represented by Bryce Dallas Howard, is a visual artist, and someone of her painting are arranged in Adam's home. The producers asked some of their friends artists to collaborate. Definite Annie Spitz: «There was a price as the best creation and the producers chose the nicest. »Will Reiser was always present during production. Well Karlin points out: «It is rare to have the scriptwriter on board of the beginning at the end of filming. His presence was legitimate. It was a mark of respect towards him and its history.»
The mass of advice and of observations which rang out of everywhere has never immersed the film director Jonathan Levine. On the contrary, he found this rather reassuring "co-operative" working method. He explains: «A film director always has hundred things in mind. In general, it is possible to manage ten at the same time, but the dead end on ninety others is made. Our working system turned out to be judicious and particularly efficient.»
Will Reiser concludes: «Before falling ill, the cancer was completely foreign to me. Today, illness made me win friends. I discovered the opened world in which people shared their history with me. All informed me how much the film had touched them and reminded them of the own experience. He more doesn't try unsuccessfully there compliment.»
50/50 the history of an experience is which transformed a man and all those who accompanied him in his battle. The film reminds us that our fellows are sometimes medicaments the dose of which it is absolutely necessary to exceed …
